I know people mean well and are just trying to be polite, but how do you answer the occasional, "How's your husband [or wife] doing?" from co-workers or people you don't know all that well? Do you just say "Oh, fine"? Or do you say, "He's about the same. Thanks for asking." Same with "How was your weekend?" from co-workers on a Monday. I know they're just trying to be friendly and may not know the situation, but sometimes it's hard to smile and say, "Oh, fine! How was yours?" -- which is what I usually end up saying. Weekends are typically NOT fine, but nobody really wants to hear that.

I often do the same thing. It's just easier to say all is well. Although recently I've been more honest. Some people just stop asking completely. I don't know if they just don't want to hear sad things or if they are concerned they will upset me. That probably depends on the person. There isn't a right answer except what works for me at the time.
